A question I often get asked.
The answer to that would depend on what you class as a professional photographer, and that was one of the first questions we got asked as a class when I started my photography course at college in 2015, "Is a professional someone who delivers an excellent level of customer service, has put time, effort and money into their training and equipment, as well as obviously producing beautiful images? Or is a professional someone who charges money for their services, regardless of skill, training, or equipment?"
Though in this case, to be honest, the answer would be the same - since 2015. I didn't set up as a business until 2021 however, but I have been offered money in the past and wasn't going to refuse it. It was way below professional rates, and in some cases even below student rates, but it helped me to get new equipment from time to time or help towards paying my course fees.
